NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson made a Christmas bet while aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2016. The terms of the bet were that whichever astronaut's country won the World Cup soccer tournament would have to buy the other an inglenook fireplace.
Kimbrough is from the United States, while Whitson is from Russia. Unfortunately for Whitson, her country – Russia – did not make it past the group stages of the tournament. As a result, she was forced to purchase an inglenook fireplace for Kimbrough as part of their Christmas bet.
The two astronauts posed for a photo together outside of their spacecraft, both holding up signs that read "I lost a bet" and "Now I have to buy you an inglenook fireplace". This hilarious photo quickly went viral online, with many people finding it amusing that two astronauts had made a Christmas bet while in space.
